SCSH 1201: WEEK 3 Maqasid al-Shariah and Sustainable Development

 

Assalamualaikum everyone! In the realm of Islamic jurisprudence, Maqasid al-Shariah, or the objectives of Islamic law, serve as a guiding framework that transcends mere legalistic interpretations. Rooted in the Quran and Sunnah which is the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, Maqasid al-Shariah aims to preserve and enhance the well-being of individuals and society. 

As we all know Maqasid al-Shariah's emphasis on stewardship aligns with sustainable development's focus on environmental conservation. Preserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and mitigating climate change become moral imperatives, as they contribute to the well-being of current and future generations. Its objectives, particularly in preserving lineage and religion, align with sustainable development's commitment to social equity and inclusion. Programs that empower marginalized communities, promote gender equality and ensure access to education contribute to achieving both ethical and developmental objectives.

Other than that, the Islamic principle of economic justice finds resonance in sustainable development efforts to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality, and ensure fair economic opportunities. Ethical business practices, social entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic policies become instruments for achieving both Maqasid al-Shariah and sustainable development goals. Moreover, the pursuit of global peace and collaboration is inherent in both Maqasid al-Shariah and sustainable development. By emphasizing justice, resolving conflicts peacefully, and fostering international cooperation, both frameworks seek a world where individuals and communities can thrive in harmony.
